Retired teacher, youth mentor and volunteer awarded OAM
Former Mannum resident Harry Long has received an Order of Australia Medal on Australia Day 2026.
Former Mannum resident Harry Long has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his service to the community and to youth.
The former primary school teacher’s list of volunteer achievements is extensive.
He is a life member of Scouts South Australia, the National Eagle Scout Association, the former Lower Murray Baseball League, Mannum Baseball Club, Mannum Community Club and Mannum Community Development Committee.
He championed the development of the sport of baseball in the Murraylands, serving as the founding president of the former Mannum club, playing, coaching and umpiring, as well as serving as president of the league; but he has also coached junior cricket, softball and football.
He first became involved with Scouting during his own childhood in the United States, and served as Chief Commissioner of Scouts SA from 2015-20, the period during which the Australian Scout Jamboree came to Tailem Bend.
In his spare time, he spent 15 years volunteering with the CFS and has been a Justice of the Peace for 24 years, among other pursuits.
Mr Long now lives in the South East.
