Who will be the next Molly Bretag at this year’s Murray Bridge Sports Awards?
Whether a hopeful Olympian or a behind-the-scenes hero at a small-town club, plenty of locals deserve to be nominated for the 2022 awards.

People like Molly Bretag are what make the Murray Bridge Sports Awards worthwhile.
In just the past six months, the Pompoota teenager has won bronze medals for Australia at a junior world cup in Germany and a world championship in Croatia.
Yet as a trap shooter, she doesn’t tend to get recognised when she walks down the street.
“Because I don’t do a sport that’s very well known, it’s hard for everyone to understand how important it is,” she said.
“You’re going away with people who have the same passion and the same goals, then you come back and go to work, you clock on and clock off like anyone else.
“I wish more people knew about (shooting) – it’s great in terms of a mental and physical challenge.”
Bretag’s achievements were recognised in 2019, when she was named Murray Bridge’s junior sports star of the year.
The question now is: which local sporting legends will follow in her footsteps?
Nominate a local legend in the 2022 Murray Bridge Sports Awards
Nominations are currently open for this year’s Murray Bridge Sports Awards.
You don’t have to be an international star to get a gong, though.
Just as worthy of recognition are the club stalwarts who toil away, out of the spotlight, for years on end; or the athletes who achieve great things against their peers at a local level.
Award categories include:
- Sportsperson of the year (male and female)
- Junior sportsperson of the year (male and female)
- Sporting volunteer of the year
Last year’s winners included Monarto Cricket Club president Ian Bates, cricketer Jarod Marston, netballer Olivia Bolt and two up-and-coming basketballers.
Council spokesman Martin Smallridge said Murray Bridge had a reputation for developing sporting legends.
“From the inspirational story of Paris or the Bush to more recent achievements by James McCrae, Katrina Webb, Alex Wilson, Alex Bolt, Ivan Long, Chad Wingard, Jarrod Lienert and Warren Tredrea, this is a breeding ground for talent,” he said.
“Sporting excellence takes dedication, and it’s important to honour and support the achievements of our local legends-in-the-making.
“So be a legend and nominate one today – show them they have the support of their community.”
Winners will be named at an awards ceremony in December.
