An elected Coalition government would spend $500,000 improving safety and security on Murray Bridge’s riverfront, federal MP Tony Pasin says.
With the 2025 federal election less than three weeks away, Mr Pasin announced that his Liberal Party would fund more lighting and security cameras at Sturt Reserve, if elected.
The announcement was a response to community concerns and a request from the Murray Bridge council, Mr Pasin said.
“I’ve heard first-hand from Murraylands residents that safety is a priority, and we’re responding with practical measures to help make public spaces safer for everyone,” he said.
Anti-social behaviour was more common around places like skate parks in the eastern states, he said.
He wanted to make sure that did not become the case here.
Murray Bridge Mayor Wayne Thorley said he, too wanted kids to be able to keep enjoying the ambience by the river.
“CCTV … is not imposing on their privacy, it’s ensuring there’s some protection for people around here when they’re enjoying their independence,” he said.
The exact location of any new cameras and lights would be determined after the election, if the Coalition won, he suggested.
The money would come from a federal Safer Communities Fund, and would expand a network of several dozen CCTV cameras which are already operational in public places around Murray Bridge.
The cameras are monitored by SA Police at their station on Swanport Road.
