Life hasn’t always been easy for Simon Goodridge, but he has done more than just overcome the challenges he has faced – he’s inspired others, too.
The Murray Bridge teenager was presented with an individual achievement award on Friday for the International Day of People with Disability.
Earlier this year, he launched a book loosely based on his own life experiences.
The person who nominated him described him as a remarkable young man and a true source of inspiration to others living with autism.
“Thank you, Simon, for being a shining light to all who need to see how brilliant things can be achieved,” event MC David Waters said.
“Through his writing, Simon breaks down barriers and offers hope, courage and representation to others living with disability.
“We’re in awe of Simon’s passion, resilience and authenticity.”
The boy himself stepped up to the mic to express his thanks to everyone who was so proud of him.
He also plugged his book, Finding Jay’s Voice, available through self-publishing company Balboa Press.

About 150 people gathered at Sturt Reserve on Friday for a day of fun activities, socialising and a free lunch.
A total of 32 nominations were received for the two awards given out on the day, showing the depth and breadth of achievement by locals living with disability and organisations dedicated to inclusion.
The second award, for a disability-friendly program or organisation, went to Murray Bridge barber shop Muscle Cutz.
The business regularly offers free haircuts to people living with disability, as well as those experiencing homelessness.

“Muscle Cutz exemplifies inclusion through action,” Mr Waters said.
“By offering free haircuts and a welcoming space, they restore dignity, build confidence and uplift spirits.
“Small acts of kindness can make a big difference.”
Owner Jen Valizadeh thanked all the carers who brought their clients in, and the family members who supported them.
Also nominated for the group award were the All Abilities Music Group, Families for Families, Inner Soul Physical Rehabilitation, Play with a Purpose, Equality Life, Alchemy Services, Livit Disability Services – formerly Community Living Australia – and Genuine Support Services Australia.
Nominated as individuals were Robin Horan, Megan Pfitzner, Veronica Ward, Rachael Yeend, Luke Norris, Dylan Grgic and Matthew Hattam.

The International Day of People with Disability is celebrated around the world on or near December 3 each year.
This year’s theme was “fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress”.
The Murray Bridge event was presented by the local council, GSSA and Mission Australia, with support by many other organisations.
