One Nation’s Robert Roylance has officially been declared the next state Member for Hammond.
While he will not be formally sworn into the role until Parliament sits on May 5, Wednesday’s declaration by election returning officer Ken Coventry OAM was a significant step.
The new MP was presented with a framed certificate certifying his election.
“I look forward to serving the people of Hammond for the next four years,” he said.
“We’re going to hit the ground running.
“I’m not a seat-warmer – I’m ready to get going.”
Absent from the short ceremony at the Electoral Commission of South Australia’s temporary office in Murray Bridge were both outgoing MP Adrian Pederick and second-place finisher Simone Bailey.
But candidates Airlie Keen, Lucas Hope and Lenny Graziano were all there to offer congratulations.
Mr Hope said he was incredibly happy that Mr Roylance had got in, while Mr Graziano urged him to rattle some cages and stand up for everyday people.
Ms Keen expressed her satisfaction that Hammond had been such a focus at this election.
“I don’t think we’ve seen an election like this ever before,” she said.
“We’ve had a hotly contested campaign and huge community outcomes for Hammond.
“It’s now Robert’s role to make sure that the government delivers on every one of their promises.”
She and Mr Coventry also paid tribute to Mr Pederick for his 20 years of service.
