Almost perfect conditions greeted a score of shooters who competed at a range of 500 metres on Saturday at the Deed Range at Monarto.

It was a dry and mild day, with a fairly gentle wind coming from the right, and reasonably consistent throughout the day, with only the odd drop-off now and then to make sure people were paying attention.

As a result, some good very scores were shot, particularly in target rifle, where Rob Paech led the way with a double possible, racking up an impressive 100.15 to win the off-rifle and handicap awards.

The pack was not far behind, however, with Jazz Irvine, Andrew Heard and Greg Traeger all also notching possibles to make for a close finish.

The good scores continued in F-class with Adrian Conlon also achieving the impressive feat of a double possible to finish on 120.13.

The score was enough to give him the off-rifle win in F-open ahead of possibles from Mark Nesti, Ian Elston, and David McDonald.

However, Conlon was pipped for the handicap this week by Frank Marshall, from F-standard, whose 117.08 and longer handicap of 10.3 were enough to give him the win.

Also shooting in the rarefied air of 115-plus this week were Brad Kirpensteyn and Gordon Harrison, both helped by with 59s in their second rounds.

No-one was complaining at the end of the day when it was revealed that nobody was able to lay claim to the dreaded Magpie Award.

It was all smiles, as well, for new member David Neumann, as he finally got a win over his son Oscar and also won the lucky wheel prize at the end of the presentation.

Shooters will certainly hope for similar conditions next week when the championship continues at 400 metres.
