Pottsy’s Putts: Bolton wins first Murray Bridge Golf Club championship

After a couple of narrow misses in recent years, club president Mark Bolton finally reached the pinnacle of his golfing career on Sunday by taking out the men’s championship final in convincing fashion seven and six over a game but outgunned Jeff Morgan.

Leading narrowly for much of the 36-hole play-off and three up after 18 holes, Bolton kicked clear in the final straight, with high-quality driving and chipping seeing him play to two under the card for the last 15 holes to simply be too good; this had certainly been coming for some time.

Wayne Duthie proved too strong for Rod Thoman, who was going for back-to-back B-grade victories, five and three being the final score.

In C grade, old marvel Graham Edwards did go back to back, seeing off Deane Pannell comfortably six and four – some feat indeed.

The Veterans division saw Peter Erickson hang on to down Joe Marcus two and one in a very tight affair.

In last week’s women’s finals, Deb Christie defeated Armani Marsters five and four in the women’s club championship final.

On Sunday, ladies’ captain Lisa Hancock snuck in one up over Hazel Thomas to claim the B-grade title, while Maureen Edwards won with the same score to be C-grade champ over Sue Antel.

Murray Bridge Rifle Club hosts Mount Barker shooters

Members from Murray Bridge and Mount Barker Rifle Clubs gathered on a blustery day at the Deed Range in Monarto to compete in the third round of the District Rifle Association Championship from 700 and 800 metres.

The wind was gusting from over shooters’ right shoulders, with the angle and the variations making things tricky for many competitors.

Many rose to the challenge, however, particularly Robert Paech in TR-A Grade and Ryan Yeates in F-Open, who both shot possibles in the second round.

Rob’s 50.05 was coupled with a 48.06 in the first round and was just enough to secure a win over Andrew Heard’s pair of 49s, 98.11 to 98.08.

Dave Gardner topped the B-Grade rankings with a 93.05.

Ryan’s superb shoot was added to the 57 he scored in the first round to give him a total of 117.10 to take the win in a closely contested F-Open field, with Rob Mitchell finishing second on 116.09 and Tim Manning third on 115.06.

Competition was also very close in F-Standard A Grade, with Gordon Harrison managing to secure the win by the barest of margins with a score of 114.07, a single centre ahead of second-placed Darryl Pink on 114.06 and third-placed Eddie Concannon on 113.04.

Martin Craig was an easy winner in F-Standard B Grade with 107.02, as was Mark De Laine in Sporting-Hunter Class on 96.06.
