A new competition will start in the Murray Bridge community in late July.

The pop tennis competition arrives in collaboration with Tennis SA, Murray Bridge Lawn Tennis and the Lower Murray Hardcourt Association.

It comes after a grant was received by the council through the federal Play Well Participation initiative.

If you’re wondering what pop tennis is, it’s a rebranded version of paddle tennis which originated in the USA.

It’s played on a smaller court with a lower compression tennis ball, and allows for longer rallies and the paddle swaps the strings for a hole-filled strike zone made of fiberglass or carbon fibre.

Both the Lower Murray Hardcourt Tennis Association and Murray Bridge Lawn Tennis Association anticipate that the new program will boost year-round participation within their clubs.

Lawn tennis president Nathan Bolt said the idea provided a great opportunity to keep people of all ages in the Murraylands involved with racquet sports during the off season.

The Lower Murray Hardcourt Association expressed gratitude to the Rural City of Murray Bridge and Tennis SA for their support.

Tennis SA CEO Debbie Sterrey said the format not only enriched the diversity of experiences within the tennis community, but also played a crucial role in enhancing the sustainability, accessibility, and vibrancy of tennis.

“By strategically integrating pop into our offerings, we aim to attract and retain players of all ages and skill levels, ensuring that tennis remains an inclusive and engaging sport for everyone,” she said.
