The old Murray Bridge will be closed on several days over the next couple of weeks as a major refurbishment continues.

The bridge will be closed between 9am and 4.30pm on:

  • Wednesday, October 5
  • Wednesday, October 12
  • Thursday, October 13
  • Friday, October 14

Motorists will need to take the Swanport Bridge or another detour during those times.

The three consecutive days of closures were timed to coincide with the school holidays, the state Department for Infrastructure and Transport said, when traffic volumes were usually lower.

More closures will be necessary in November.

Every effort was being made to minimise the number of closures required, DIT said.

The 143-year-old bridge has been reduced to a single lane of traffic since May to allow the refurbishment work to be done.

The $46 million project will be finished in late 2023, and will allow the bridge to keep being used into the 2060s.

Correction: The total cost of the project has been updated based on information from DIT.
