Every day, around 72-79 Australian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men, with around 30,000 new diagnoses each year.

It also accounts for roughly 13 per cent of cancer deaths among Australian men.

To know your risk, it’s worth knowing the signs.

Prostate cancer may cause no symptoms in its early stages.

When symptoms occur, they can include:

  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination
  • A weak or interrupted urine stream
  • Needing to urinate more often, particularly at night
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Pain or discomfort when urinating
  • Pain in the back, hips or pelvis

If you’re concerned about any of these symptoms, what can you do?

Talk to your GP about PSA testing

Australia’s 2026 clinical guidelines for early detection of prostate cancer provide updated guidance for discussing prostate cancer risk and PSA testing with your GP.

For many men, PSA testing – or prostate-specific antigen testing, a blood test – may be considered from around 50 years of age, with earlier discussion recommended for men at increased risk, including those with a family history of prostate cancer.

PSA testing is an individual decision and should be discussed with your GP based on your age, family history, risk factors and personal preferences.

Don’t wait – start the conversation

This Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, encourage the men in your life to speak with their GP.
