Heather Barclay will be the next chief executive officer at the Murray Bridge council.

Ms Barclay, the council’s assets and infrastructure director, had been acting in the top job since soon after former CEO Michael Sedgman’s departure in April.

Mayor Wayne Thorley said her five-and-a-half years of local experience had made her an ideal candidate.

“As the general manager assets and infrastructure … she has been pivotal in our growth planning and public realm revitalisation, making us stronger together,” he said.

“She already has strong connections in our community that will be continued.

“This, together with her strong reputation for being a transformational leader, and her drive and passion for our growing community, will … guide our focus on growth and economy in the coming years.”

All councillors had input into the CEO selection process, which Mr Thorley said had been “highly contested and very rigorous”.

Ms Barclay has been in local government for the past 30 years, having worked for the City of Adelaide as well as numerous councils in South Australia and Victoria.

She had previously specialised in municipal engineering, and gained tertiary qualifications in surveying and project management.

She started work in Murray Bridge in January of 2018.
