Next Murray Bridge tree giveaway will be four times bigger
A thousand free seedlings were snapped up in less than 24 hours last week, so the council plans to go bigger next time.
Up to 4000 free seedlings will be made available to Murray Bridge residents next April after a recent giveaway proved overwhelmingly popular.
The city’s council offered 1000 free native plants to locals last week: between five and 20 per person, depending on the size of their property.
They were snapped up within 24 hours.
Community biodiversity officer Glenn Dean said the level of interest in the giveaway had taken him and his team by surprise.
“We did not anticipate the level of interest in the free plants program,” he said.
“We apologise to those in the community who missed out.”
Volunteers will spend the next eight months preparing for another giveaway in April, which will be announced on the council’s Facebook page.
People who missed out on seedlings this time around will have first dibs.
The tree giveaway was proposed by Councillor Karen Eckermann as a way of extending to private properties the council’s focus on increasing shade cover across the district – part of its efforts to fight climate change.
