The first stage of a $1.4 million facilities upgrade at Mypolonga Memorial Oval has been completed with the switching-on of its new lights.

Mypolonga’s footballers and cricketers played a T20 cricket match under the new lights to celebrate the milestone, watched on by state Primary Industries and Regional Development Minister Clare Scriven.

The state government has committed more than $1 million to a series of upgrades underway at the oval, including $160,000 for the light towers.

Night games will now be able to be played at Mypo, as the new lights put out twice as much illumination as the old ones.

An extension to the netball and tennis courts has already been completed, and in the coming months the Tigers’ combined sporting clubs will also benefit from:

  • a unisex changeroom and canteen building
  • a new playground
  • power, wastewater and other infrastructure upgrades

Locals including the town’s footballers, netballers, cricketers and tennis players have contributed more than $200,000 to the project; and the Murray Bridge council has put in $50,000.

It was an exciting time for all four sporting clubs and the community, combined sporting club president Mark Rowley said.

“Minister Scriven and the state government have clearly recognised what our sporting complex means to the broader rural community of Mypo, and they’ve invested in us,” he said.

“We need infrastructure that supports our community’s wellbeing and connection, and it all happens here in our sporting hub.

“Our clubs have the strongest membership on record, and we’re bucking the trend of other regional districts by continuing to grow.”

Also present at the event were Murray Bridge Mayor Wayne Thorley and Labor candidate Simone Bailey.

Mypolonga becomes the third Murraylands town to get new light towers this year, following on from Mannum and Callington.
