Thanks to a $214,000 grant from Variety SA, Monarto Safari Park has acquired a bus that will allow adults and children with mobility issues to travel around the park.

Variety SA officially handed over the bus last Friday, marking the first partnership between Zoos SA and Variety with a focus on Monarto Safari Park.

The bus has been customised to meet specific accessibility needs; it can accommodate up to five wheelchairs and has a rear internal wheelchair lift.

Variety SA chief executive Mark McGill said there was a natural fit between Variety SA and Monarto Safari Park.

“Variety and Zoos SA share a common philosophy to create an environment where all children, regardless of circumstance, can enjoy the wonder of nature,” he said.

“The On Safari bespoke vehicle provided by Variety is designed to give children, specifically those in wheelchairs, the same opportunities as other children to enjoy the amazing experiences and interaction on offer.”

The partnership will run for three years, and the bus will remain part of the Zoos SA fleet indefinitely.

The funds which paid for the bus were raised, in part, through events such as the Variety Aussie Muscle Car Run which visited Murray Bridge last month.

Monarto Safari Park had already been nominated for an accessible tourism award at this year’s SA Tourism Awards for its efforts to create memorable experiences for people of all abilities.
