As far as the kids are concerned, the most important part of Mypolonga Memorial Oval’s redevelopment is finished.
A new playground was completed last week – black and gold, of course – and children clambered all over it at Thursday night’s training and all through the weekend.
It’s the latest milestone in a $1.4 million project that will make the Tigers’ home ground one of the best equipped in the River Murray competition.
New lights around the oval were switched on in December.
Still under construction are a canteen, new toilets, men’s and women’s changerooms and trainers’ rooms; plus some of the infrastructure that will sit beneath it, like a new wastewater system.
That last item, with a $250,000 price tag, was tacked on as a result of the Labor Party’s state election win in March.
Mypolonga’s sporting clubs hope to get the whole thing finished by September 12, when the ground will host the River Murray Netball Association’s grand finals and football preliminary finals.
However, there was one more item on the Mypo sporting clubs’ wish list, grants officer Courtney Blacker said: a deck on the roof.
Wouldn’t it be nice to enjoy a 360-degree view of the footy oval, netball courts and playground on game days, giving the opportunity to crack a drink while watching mum, dad and kids do their thing?
There could even be a rooftop bar.
If, that is, the clubs can find a major sponsor or funding partner able to meet the cost of decking, balustrades and other fittings, estimated at between $40,000 and $50,000.

The sporting club upgrades attracted $1 million worth of funding from the state government in two lots in 2024.
Hundreds of thousands more was raised by the town’s football, netball, cricket and tennis clubs.
The work had been badly needed.
For years, Mypolonga’s netballers had endured desperately inadequate facilities, including no dedicated female changerooms and only a single shower between more than 100 players.
