Do you know a legendary local sportsperson or volunteer who deserves to be celebrated?

Now’s the time to nominate them for the first ever Murray Bridge Sports Awards.

Prizes will be awarded to a male and female sports person and young sports person of the year, plus a volunteer of the year, at a stand-alone awards night.

Nominees need to either live or play sport in the Murray Bridge council district.

Similar awards were previously given out at the city’s annual Australia Day event, but Mayor Brenton Lewis said the 60-plus sporting clubs based in the Murray Bridge district deserved a celebration of their own.

“Sport is vital in rural communities like ours,” he said.

“It’s where our people come out to enjoy friendship and fellowship, stay healthy and enjoy sport in a sportsmanlike manner.

“I hope the people in (local sporting) organisations really get behind this program and think of people worthy of a nomination.

“I want this first year to be really good – let’s kick it off on a really good note.”

Reigning sports person of the year Morgan Coull said the new awards would offer a unique opportunity to showcase the community’s sporting spirit.

The council is now seeking nominations.

The sports awards will form part of its broader “local legends” program, alongside its spring garden competition and Australia Day awards – both of which are currently open for nominations – and its annual Christmas lights competition, which will open soon.
