Two tobacco retailers in Murray Bridge have been shut down by authorities for the second time in seven months.

Both Misty Smoke on Bridge Street and Tobaccocino on Adelaide Road were ordered by Consumer and Business Services to close for a 28-day period from March 31.

A notice fixed to the front wall of each business alleged that that Consumer and Business Affairs Minister Michael Brown “reasonably suspect(s) that tobacco products or e-cigarette products are being, or are likely to be, unlawfully sold or supplied at the premises”.

Both shops had previously been shut down last September, several months after being visited by CBS inspectors.

Anyone proven to have engaged in the sale of black market tobacco products can be liable for a fine of up to $350,000 for a first offence, while a business can be fined up to $750,000.

The state government has spent the past two years cracking down on tobacco traders under Operation Eclipse, shutting down more than 100 retailers and seizing at least $50 million worth of product.
