Murray Bridge man arrested after hit-and-run accident
Plus police make arrests over an assault and a theft, search for a missing defibrillator, and prosecute a case of animal cruelty.
A man has been arrested after a hit-and-run accident in Murray Bridge over the weekend.
Around 5pm on Sunday, a car and motorbike collided at the intersection of Adelaide Road and the Old Princes Highway at White Hill.
The car’s driver allegedly failed to stop at the scene.
A witness followed the car down the road and onto Bridge Street, where he managed to stop the car and pull the keys out of the ignition.
However, the car’s driver escaped on foot.
It took until 9pm for a police patrol to track him down.
At that time, they gave him a breath test, which allegedly returned a reading of 0.232, or more than five times the legal blood alcohol limit.
They also found he had previously been disqualified from driving.
The 55-year-old Murray Bridge man will face charges of aggravated causing harm by dangerous driving, leaving the scene of an accident after causing harm, aggravated driving without due care and driving while disqualified.
The motorcyclist was taken to the Murray Bridge hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Just over two weeks have passed since another, unrelated hit-and-run accident claimed the life of a Murray Bridge woman.
Arrest made after assault on Lohmann Street
Meanwhile, police have arrested a 31-year-old man over an alleged assault in Murray Bridge last Wednesday.
The man allegedly assaulted a woman known to him at a house on Lohmann Street around 2.30pm.
Bystanders called police after seeing him staggering down the street soon afterwards.
Contrary to rumours, police said he had not attempted a carjacking or injured anyone.
The woman he allegedly attacked did not require medical attention.
The man was charged with aggravated assault, taken to hospital for treatment and will face court.
Pit bike had been stolen six years ago
Also arrested last week was the rider of a pit bike – a small-scale dirt bike – which was found to be stolen.
Police spotted the bike being ridden on Frances Street, Murray Bridge around midday last Monday, October 31.
A background check revealed it had been stolen in Queensland in 2016.
Officers located and arrested its rider, only to find him – allegedly – in possession of stolen clothes and an amount of methamphetamine.
The 29-year-old local man will face Murray Bridge Magistrates Court on December 7, charged with the illegal use of a motor vehicle, possession of the bike and the drugs, and driving while disqualified, unregistered and uninsured.
Defibrillator stolen
Police are investigating an unusual theft from Murray Bridge Community Club.
Sometime between August and October 8, someone broke into a locked cabinet and stole a defibrillator.
Anyone who knows its location should return it to the club or the nearest police station.
Its absence could put club patrons’ lives at risk, police warned.
Truck driver tests positive for ice
A 50-year-old Victorian man has allegedly tested positive for methamphetamine while behind the wheel at Tailem Bend on Friday.
Officers from SA Police’s heavy vehicle enforcement section pulled him over on the Princes Highway at 6.55pm.
He was directed not to drive for 24 hours and will face court.
Man charged with animal cruelty offences
Finally, a man will face court this month over a case of animal cruelty in Murray Bridge, according to the RSPCA.
He was charged with two counts of ill treatment of an animal after a one-year-old dog was allegedly found in a small, filthy room at a local property.
The dog remains in the RSPCA’s custody.
