With the final exam of his apprenticeship completed, Isaac Peckover is about to be a fully qualified electrician, and there’s nowhere else he’d rather be than Murray Bridge.

The past four years have been a whirl for graduating electrician Isaac Peckover.

Back in 2021, he was a few subjects into an architecture degree at university when he realised his interests lay elsewhere.

A mate of his was an electrician and said it was alright, so Isaac went to do a day’s work experience with a family friend.

“On day one I was like, ‘This is good, this is fun,’” he says.

“It’s hands-on but it’s not brain-dead work, if that makes sense.

“You’re solving problems, it’s technical, you can dig your teeth into it and there’s so much to specialise in … residential work, wiring up new builds, fault-finding, maintenance.”

He soon started an apprenticeship with a big electrical company in Adelaide, where he was one of about 90 employees.

But – as more and more people in their 20s are doing – he realised he would have a better chance at buying his own home if he moved to Murray Bridge.

He already felt somewhat at home in the Murraylands, having worked at the El Shaddai campsite at Wellington on and off over the years.

He started with another electrical firm at first, but has spent the past year finishing his apprenticeship at Ahrns Electrical, “fixing people’s stuff and learning heaps”.

He raves about the culture at the fast-growing, family-owned company, named the best tradies in the region at the recent Murraylands Business Awards.

“It’s probably the best company I’ve ever worked at, and not even just in the electrical industry,” he says.

“Tris (Ahrns) has put together such a good team – there’s no weak links.

“Everyone is the cream of the crop, people who take pride in the job and do good work.

“It feels great to be on the best team around.”

And the work itself?

He has spent most of his apprenticeship doing residential jobs, but looks forward to gaining more experience in all the types of work Ahrns Electrical does, including industrial, commercial and agricultural jobs.

“If you need any electrical work done, give us a buzz,” he says.
