What do you think of the Coorong council’s plans to reshape Tailem Bend’s main street?

A town hall meeting next Wednesday night will give locals a chance to have their say about a bold plan which was put to a council meeting in February.

Among other things, the master plan suggested:

  • creating a grassed “civic heart” in place of the railway station car park
  • improving pedestrian crossings on Railway Terrace
  • relocating the steam engine at the playground and/or other youth-related facilities
  • making the main street more inviting for RV owners

Mayor Paul Simmons hoped the plan, and the works that would follow, would make the main drag more useable and increase locals’ pride in the community.

“Greening our communities came through as a strong theme when council undertook its community consultation for the Community Vision Plan in late 2019, as did enhancements to town amenity, comfort and improved character,” he said.

“The community has asked for improved streetscapes, town entry statements and greener communities, and now we are delivering on that through the development of some high-level master planning.

“This planning will capture the communities’ streetscape aspirations and guide the council’s direction in this space.”

The master plan was developed based on public feedback during an earlier consultation round last year.
