Some of South Australia’s most promising young community leaders, including from the Murraylands, have been honoured at a civic reception at Government House in Adelaide.

The Governor, Frances Adamson AC, hosted the event for the state’s 2025 and 2026 young citizens of the year on Monday night in her capacity as patron of the Australia Day Council of SA.

It followed on from a young citizens leadership forum run by the Australia Day council.

Leadership was not about titles or achievements – or about age – Her Excellency said.

It was demonstrated through service, initiative, kindness and commitment.

“I have every confidence that your compassion, courage, and service will continue to help shape South Australia’s future,” she said.

Young citizens recognised in the Murraylands on Australia Day 2026 included anti-violence campaigner Neko Schoenau, fire preventer Said Balhaddad, defibrillator fundraiser Thomas Hogben and football camera operator Sophie Frahn.

Youth advocate Jess Deane was among their number in 2025.
