‘We’ll look after you’: Shared values keep John DeMichele in the Raine and Horne family

This is the tale of two family-owned businesses, and the shared values that have made them number one in Murraylands real estate.

You could argue that John DeMichele Real Estate isn’t the biggest name in property in the Murraylands, but only for one reason.

Raine and Horne is the nationally trusted name he and his team have traded under for the past 28 years.

The relationship between the Murray Bridge-based agency – a locally owned franchise – and the national company runs deeper than just a name, though.

They share a reputation built on the motto, “we’ll look after you”.

Their partnership is stronger than ever, even as their shared brand has evolved.

Raine and Horne Murraylands’ office in Murray Bridge had a facelift over the summer, reflecting the agency’s latest corporate style; but it remains a family-oriented business.

John and Kim DeMichele have been at the helm of the local agency since 1998, and nationally, executive chairman Angus Raine represents the fourth generation of his family in charge.

“We feel safe in being part of (the Raine and Horne) business,” John says.

“We’re not just about KPIs.

“We’ve built our business up on the basis of family-run, old-fashioned service.”

From homesteads to high rises

Founded in 1833, Raine and Horne is one of the oldest privately owned companies in the southern hemisphere, and one of Australia’s most recognisable brands.

Since the day Tom Raine and Joseph Horne began trading in Sydney’s central business district, the company they founded has been committed to giving personalised service across sales, leasing, management and consulting.

Today, Raine and Horne’s values are:

  • Integrity: Doing the right thing and acting in clients’ best interests
  • Collaboration: Working together is crucial for success
  • Innovation: Creatively using technology to create a seamless customer experience
  • Knowledge: Perpetual learning and development
  • Reliability: Being there every step of the way
  • Professional: Supporting team members to be the best they can be

The company has recently reclaimed its age-old motto: “We’ll look after for you.”

“We kept searching for the right words to describe our vision for the future, and nothing felt as complete or as honest as what we already had,” CEO Chris Nicholl says.

“In a market shaped by technology, speed and data, trust and human expertise remain the differentiator.”

‘We’ll look after you’

Those are values which filter down through the DeMichele family into the rest of the team at Raine and Horne Murraylands, say property consultants Michael Cox and Casey DeMichele.

“We live and breathe the region,” Casey says.

“We’re not just trying to make a buck in the community, we’re trying to better the community.”

Having a national network behind them, giving them the tools that give them the edge in a crowded market, has made that job easier.

The trusted local team at Raine and Horne has been here through all of the local property market’s ups and downs, since long before Murraylands real estate became the attractive investment it is today.

“We were here to help clients when they were selling at a loss, when they faced enormous financial pressure, when times weren’t very good,” Michael says.

“I like to hope locals remember that.”

That’s what the motto “we’ll look after you” is all about.
