Murray Bridge News has been named the Murraylands’ best media outlet by a very important measure: cake decorating.
Managing editor Peri Strathearn, author of this story, won a media cake decorating contest at the Callington Show on Sunday.
I made a shameless appeal to parochialism with a design inspired by the switching-on of the new light towers at Callington’s oval earlier this month.
Constructing the towers out of little lollies, buttercream icing and sprinkles was a challenge, especially in the windy conditions, but one which paid off.
I was also rather happy with the placement of lollies in regulation cricket field placings, and the tiny car-shaped sprinkles in the car park.
Placing a close second was Power FM’s Craig Pitman with an innovative take on Murray Bridge’s bunyip, her cave dug out of the centre of his cake.
Third was 5MU’s Adam Connelly, with a desert island scene; while his colleague Jennie Lenman, The Murray Valley Standard’s Kaitlyn Gibbons and The Southern Argus’ Deirdre Graham also took the opportunity to express their baking-based creativity.
Murray Bridge News more often takes a collaborative approach with regard to other publications.
We tag-team with the radio folks on events like the Murraylands Business Awards, cross-promote our Murraylands Life magazine, and include links to any stories we might have missed in our weekly email edition.
But the cake thing?
That was serious business.
