In a quirk of fate, the president of a local Justices of the Peace association had welcomed managing editor Peri Strathearn as a guest speaker only days earlier.

In winning this month’s Murray Bridge News subscriber prize, Tom Haig has made a strong case for the existence of karma.

As president of the Lower Murray Justices Group, an association of local JPs, he welcomed managing editor Peri Strathearn as a guest speaker last Tuesday night.

Then, as luck would have it, on Thursday morning Mr Haig’s number was selected at random in Murray Bridge News’ monthly subscriber draw.

He took home a pack of prizes worth about $150, but was most taken with his new Murray Bridge News mug.

The expatriate Scot and Murray Bridge councillor became a subscriber in July 2020, soon after this publication launched to fill a gap left by the temporary disappearance of the local newspaper during COVID-19.

“When The Standard stopped and Murray Bridge was at a crossroads with respect to … local news, you stepped up, you filled the void,” he said.

“I thought, ‘(Mr Strathearn) is a local, he’s worked in the region, he’s got a family in the region and we should support him’.

“We didn’t know if The Standard was ever going to come back.”

Like hundreds of other community members, Mr Haig has maintained his support in the years since.

He encouraged other locals to do the same.

“It’s not expensive, and it keeps people informed,” he said.

“It’s just a no-brainer for me.”
