Things to do in Murray Bridge: March 1-7, 2024
Your guide to Cars and Coffee’s “100th” birthday, Fringe by the River, the Wellington Barrel Tub Regatta and more local events.
What better way to celebrate the 100th Cars and Coffee event in Murray Bridge this Sunday than with a 100-year-old Oldsmobile?
Pallamana couple Reg and Heather Snelling and their vintage auto have been regulars at the riverfront gathering for years.
“You go there, there’s other like-minded people and you can go around and have a look at their cars,” Mr Snelling said.
“I prefer the older ones, something that’s got a bit of character about them.”
The Snellings picked up their 1924 Model 30 at a swap meet at Strathalbyn 12 years ago, and Mr Snelling spent “untold hours” restoring it.
It was a labour of love.
The first car he ever owned was a 1926 Oldsmobile he bought for £20 as a teenager.
“They’re not a high-speed machine, but these old cars have got what I call a comfort zone: they’ll go about 30-35 miles per hour, just a nice cruising speed,” he said.
“You can go a lot faster, but they’re not happy.”
Whatever speed you travel at, you’ll find plenty of old and new vehicles – plus breakfast, coffee and a vintage machinery display – down at Murray Bridge’s wharf precinct from 8am this Sunday.
