Things to do in Murray Bridge: July 9-15, 2021
Many NAIDOC Week events have been postponed, but you can still hear the Deadly Nannas or attend a school holiday activity.
Music has a power to heal and inspire, to preserve culture and cross generations – a power the Deadly Nannas know how to harness.
In recent years, the musical group’s Ngarrindjeri and non-Aboriginal women have written and performed their message songs at countless community events, on CD and even on television.
Most recently, three members joined forces with children from Tyndale Christian School and Stamp Music to produce a track called My Country for NAIDOC Week – click here to watch the video on Facebook.
They have even been nominated for a South Australian Community Achievement Award.
Georgina Trevorrow said she and the other Deadly Nannas, or Nragi Muthar, wanted to teach young people to be strong, brave, proud and connected to their language and culture.
“Community members have said that our lyrics have helped them heal old wounds; and that they love hearing our songs, as it gives them comfort and connection to their communities,” she said.
“Children and adults who haven’t had the opportunity to connect to their language love listening to our songs in language, as they find it easy to say and learn.
“Having two non-Aboriginal women sing with the Deadly Nannas gives hope to all community members that if we can work and stand together, walk and talk together, we can all build bridges and become one.”
