The local achievers who helped our communities make it through 2020 will be celebrated around the Murraylands on Tuesday, Australia Day.

Mayor Brenton Lewis said the awards to be handed out at a breakfast ceremony in Murray Bridge, and a lunch-time function in the Willow Street precinct at Tailem Bend, would serve as a reminder of all that was good in the world.

“This past year has been a challenging one for all of us, but through it all we have banded together as a community to protect, respect and help keep each other safe,” he said.

“Those common ideals of friendship, community and innovation are some of the great ideals that unite us all as Australians.

“The Australia Day awards are a great opportunity for us to come together, pause and reflect, learn from each other and celebrate the people ... who go above and beyond to help make our communities great.”

Food and coffee will be available from 7am in Murray Bridge ahead of a 7.45am ceremony which will include five awards and a citizenship ceremony.

At Tailem, 11.30am will be the start time for a short ceremony featuring a speech by dragon boater Lynn Hill and presentation to citizen of the year Angela Tomkinson.
