Tailem Bend needs $223k worth of new footpaths
The Coorong council will consult ratepayers about a plan to build five kilometres of footpaths across the district during the next five years.

Five streets at Tailem Bend may get new footpaths under a $600,000 plan drafted by the Coorong council.
At a meeting on Tuesday, councillors were told that there were still no sealed footpaths along 20 kilometres of roads in towns across the district.
Council staff identified about a quarter of those roads as “high priority” for reasons including their proximity to schools and sporting facilities.
If ratepayers approve of the plan during a public consultation period, the Tailem Bend streets due to get sealed footpaths over the next five years would include:
- George Street (2026-27)
- Granites Road, between Trevena Road and the oval (2023-24)
- Railway Terrace, between the roundabout and Parklands Terrace (2022-24)
- Trevena Road (2023-24)
- Upton Street (2022-23)
Jacob and Pontt Streets were identified as the next priority for an upgrade after that, to improve access to Tailem Bend Bowling Club.
Streets at Meningie, Coonalpyn and Tintinara would also get new footpaths.
The council will consult the public about the draft plan in the coming weeks after it was approved by councillors on Tuesday.
The Tailem Bend works scheduled for the next five years would cost a touch over $223,000, or more than a third of the total for the footpath strategy.
Councillors and staff would have to find a way to fit the spending into their upcoming budgets.
The plan would grow the council’s footpath network by about 27 per cent.
There are currently 18.8km of sealed footpaths across the district.
