A Riverglades woman is recovering after becoming involved in a major traffic accident at the bottom of the South Eastern Freeway on Sunday.

The 73-year-old was a passenger in one of seven vehicles hit by a truck at Glen Osmond just before 3.45pm.

The truck hurtled through the intersection of the freeway and Cross, Glen Osmond and Portrush Roads at high speed before crashing to a stop near a fountain.

The Riverglades woman was among nine people taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with minor physical injuries but, incredibly, nobody was killed or seriously hurt.

Tailem Bend man arrested after police chase

Meanwhile, a Tailem Bend man has been charged over a police chase in Adelaide’s southern suburbs on Saturday night.

The 19-year-old was allegedly behind the wheel of a Holden Commodore that was spotted travelling at speed on Grand Boulevard at Seaford Rise just after 8.30pm.

A police helicopter followed the car to Hackham, where its driver jumped out and into the passenger seat of a Ford Falcon.

Two men allegedly drove that car to Port Noarlunga, where they jumped out and ran, and one tried unsuccessfully to escape police by swimming across the Onkaparinga River.

Officers charged the Tailem Bend man with dangerous driving, speeding and driving while disqualified; and impounded both cars.

The two men will face court at Christies Beach on August 25.

Woman imprisoned over freeway chase, Tailem Bend theft, other offences

Finally, a woman has been sentenced over a crime spree which included speeding near Murray Bridge and a break-in at Tailem Bend late last year.

Kathleen Vivian Lucy Karpany was involved in a police chase on the South Eastern Freeway on October 18, during which police clocked her doing up to 140 kilometres per hour in the 110 zone.

She had also stolen an auxiliary cable and $20 in change from a Holden Apollo station wagon at Tailem Bend the same day.

The theft and chase followed a string of offences committed over three days and stretching from Adelaide to the Riverland.

In Adelaide’s District Court last Monday, Judge Timothy Heffernan sentenced Karpany to spend more than two and a half years in prison over a total of 12 charges.

The judge noted her difficult personal history and long history of drug use with some sympathy, but said it was important that people be discouraged from engaging in dangerous car chases.

She will become eligible for parole in November 2023.
