The Tailem Bend Lions Club has been left shocked and disappointed after approximately $500 worth of their Christmas cakes were stolen earlier this month.
Lions Club member Raylene Thomas said the cakes had been placed in the storeroom at Tailem Bend Foodland on November 19.
They were discovered missing when volunteers returned on November 21.
“We’ve used this storeroom for five or six years, and nothing has ever been taken,” Ms Thomas said.
“We can normally leave everything in there overnight and pick it up the next morning.
“But this time, we came in and they were gone.”
The Lions Club sells the popular Christmas cakes annually, with all proceeds returned to the local community.
Funds typically support school sponsorships, churches, kindergartens, football and netball clubs, and community groups needing help with equipment or uniforms.
“Everything we raise goes straight back into the town,” Ms Thomas said.
“Everybody is very disappointed.
“We do everything we can to support Tailem Bend.”
The club has contacted police and its insurer to see whether the loss can be recovered.
Supplies scheduled for delivery on the day of the theft ensured the group was not left short, though additional stock has now been ordered.
Ms Thomas said she hoped the person or group responsible may reconsider.
“I’m just hoping they’ve got a conscience and bring the cakes back, but I doubt it,” she said.
“We’ll survive, and we’ll keep looking after the town.”
