Tailem Bend Auto Club capitalises on Supercars buzz
Members have shown their vehicles off at a street party in Murray Bridge ahead of this year’s OTR Super Sprint.
There may not have been a parade at Tailem Bend this year, but locals have still found ways to get involved with the town’s Supercars race.
About 50 members of the Tailem Bend Auto Club got out to East Terrace, Murray Bridge for a pre-race street party on Thursday night.
Among them was Phil Gogel, who was asked to park his Ford XY GT – styled after the won in which Allan Moffat won Bathurst in 1971 – in the back of a live cross to Seven News Adelaide.
The street party was a short, sharp and shiny affair, particularly given the inclement weather.
A handful of drivers came out to sign memorabilia, but they and the modest crowd had mostly disappeared by 6pm.
Better attended was the OTR Super Sprint itself.
More than 41,000 people got out to the newly renamed Shell V-Power Motorsport Park over the weekend, the biggest crowd the event had attracted since its first year.
The venue’s managing director, Sam Shahin, said he was happy with how the crowd had responded to new ideas including Saturday night’s after-race concert.
“This is a proud event and we are thrilled that the public continues to support it alongside the year-round activity at our venue as we continue to put South Australia on the world motorsport map,” he said.
“I would like to thank South Australians and interstate travelers for backing our event.
“We hope you enjoyed the stellar conditions.”
