Arrest made after car thefts and break-ins
Police have arrested a 45-year-old Victorian man over a series of break-ins and other crimes in Murray Bridge.
The man was allegedly seen removing number plates from a Volkswagen SUV near the corner of Maurice Road and Christian Road around 10.30am on Friday.
The vehicle had been stolen during a local break-in the previous day.
Officers arrived on the scene, searched the man and allegedly found the car’s keys, number plates and an amount of methamphetamine in his possession.
Further investigations allegedly turned up goods stolen during the break-in, plus a Toyota Hilux which had been reported stolen in Victoria, along with evidence that the man had also been responsible for another local break-in two days prior.
Police charged him with two counts of serious criminal trespass, illegal use of a motor vehicle, unlawful possession and providing a false name.
He was refused police bail ahead of a court appearance in Murray Bridge on Monday.
Community organisations targeted by petty thieves
A number of local community organisations in Murray Bridge have reportedly had sheds broken into in recent weeks.
Churches, educational facilities and sporting clubs are all believed to have been targeted since April, with small tools among the items typically taken.
While Murray Mallee crime prevention officer Kim Ide declined to confirm specifics, she did suggest that arrests and reports had been made for offences fitting that description during that time period.
“In general, places that are perceived as ‘easy’ have greater potential to be targeted and may unfortunately be re-targeted if further crime prevention measures are not put in place,” Senior Constable Ide told Murray Bridge News.
“Sheds may have simple locks and/or construction that are easily smashed, cut, jemmied or broken quickly.
“Improvements to security can assist in deterring break-ins, (and) CCTV that functions effectively can assist police to identify suspects.”
She also suggested engraving or otherwise marking items which might be susceptible to theft so they could be identified later.
Twenty-four cases of serious criminal trespassing on non-residential properties were reported by SA Police during March and April.
