A hospital stay can be a dark and cloudy time, but the members of a Murray Bridge volunteer group are dedicated to making it a little brighter.

The Sunshiners have been helping out at Murray Bridge Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital for 20 years this week.

Since May 8, 2006 they have delivered morning and afternoon teas and suppers; managed a mobile kiosk selling reading material, puzzle books, snacks, craft items and toiletries; provided social and admin support; and even assisted with client transport.

Among the group’s 21 volunteers is Barb Young, who has contributed her time for the past 13 years.

“My favourite part of the job is interacting with patients,” she said.

“A lot of them like to chat, and even a simple ‘hi’ can be enough to let them know they matter and have support available.

“The group’s daily activities help to take pressure off the staff and have a positive impact on patients.”

Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network volunteer coordinator Leanne Hurford suggested she couldn’t thank the Sunshiners enough for their contributions.

“The Sunshiners are an extra pair of hands when needed, providing services, running errands and offering a friendly ear when patients are feeling anxious, lonely, or isolated from family or friends,” she said.

“They will go out of their way to ensure everyone is being looked after, and they bring joy to many with their kindness and thoughtfulness.

“They also undertake small fundraising events, with all profits raised, including from donations and the mobile kiosk, used to purchase items for the hospital and allied health, which benefit both staff and consumers.”

Ms Young encouraged anyone with an interest in helping others, fundraising and spending time with a wonderful group of people to consider volunteering.

“The volunteers also have a great relationship with each other and go out for social coffee once a month, which makes the work even more enjoyable,” she said.
