Street party will return to Tailem Bend ahead of 2024 Spring Nationals
Locals will be able to get revved up for the drag racing with food and drink, live music, car displays and more this October.
Tailem Bend will again get a free street party this spring as national-level drag racing comes to town.
The organisers of the Spring Nationals, together with the Coorong council, announced on Tuesday that thousands of people would be welcomed to Tailem’s main street on the evening of Friday, October 18.
Once there, they’ll find:
- live music
- food and drink
- car displays by Tailem Bend Auto Club
- National Drag Racing Championship drivers
About 2500 people attended last year’s street party.
Coorong Mayor Paul Simmons hoped even more would come along in 2024.
“The Bend’s contribution to the community and visitor economy is significant, and the street party is one way to celebrate,” he said.
Alistair MacDonald, CEO of the Bend Motorsport Park, said it would be a privilege to offer the community a taste of the weekend’s drag racing action.
“A crucial part of our mission is to drive visitation to the region, and Spring Nationals is a vital pillar to that,” he said.
The party will serve as a curtain-raiser for a big weekend at the Dragway at the Bend, with competition in the national top fuel and funny car championships.
Eventgoers are sure to come from all over Australia to see some of the nation’s biggest daredevils race down the quarter-mile at more than 500 kilometres per hour.
Railway Terrace will be closed for the street party between 4.30 and 8pm.
