Local tennis players David Altmann (Murray Bridge Lawn Tennis Association) and Heather Richards (Brinkley Tennis Club) have participated in the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games held in Cairns last week.

In perfect weather conditions at the newly upgraded Cairns International Tennis Centre, David and Heather were able to secure a silver medal from eight pairings in the mixed doubles.

On the following day, both players entered the singles competition and enjoyed more success: Heather secured another silver from a round robin group of five players, only losing to the gold medallist.

David played his section in a knockout tournament of 16 entrants, making the semi-finals and gaining a hard-fought bronze medal.

The medals were unique, being made from Indigenous-Australian timber.

The Great Barrier Reef Games are held every two years and are scheduled again for May 2025.

Pottsy’s putts: Moloney’s luck turns around

Normally out-of-luck golfer Damo Moloney – noted for his non-stop commentary of players around him – turned his fortunes around on Saturday by winning the Langsford Plasterboard Stroke Comp at the Murray Bridge Golf Club.

Moloney also played out of his skin on the back nine to secure the day’s Pro Comp.

Incredibly, Moloney would have taken out the trifecta with a Yabby win on the fourth hole too, but he doesn’t enter that competition.

After Round 8 of the RMNA 2023 season on Saturday, the Imperials are still numero uno, with 16 points and 64.03%.

Also in regard to netty, the RMNA had five teams represent the association at the Mid Hills Carnival on Sunday May 21 at Woodside.

In true Woodside tradition, the day started out a little cold and bleak, with a few early showers.

But the sun did shine throughout the day, and other than a few slippery tumbles, the girls were able to enjoy a successful day, having at least one win, and our 11 and Under team took out the grand final undefeated.

15 and under, Div 1

Game 1: Great Southern 24 defeated RMNA 17

Game 1 was a very physical and tight game. RMNA had some great passing in the mid court and into the goal circle, but Great Southern finished off strong in the second half, taking out the win.

Game 2: RMNA 19 defeated Mid Hills 16

Game 2 saw our first win of the day. Goalie-to-goalie passing worked well, and the team’s pressure on the ball resulted in many intercepts. The girls used their voices well and came out with the win.

Game 3: RMNA 23 defeated Hills 7

Another great game by the RMNA girls, who went out hungry for the win. RMNA goalers shot well. The team passed well, and their backup was great. A well-deserved win.

Game 5: St John’s Lutheran 24 defeated RMNA 18

RMNA needed to win the final game of the minor round to finish second and make it through to the grand final. The first half, the girls played strong netball, resulting in goal-for-goal scoring for the majority of the half. The girls put in a strong effort, but St John’s Lutheran were able to get a few turnovers to turn the game in their favour. A credit to the girls for their efforts during the carnival, which was reflected by the opposing coach congratulating the girls, not only on their talent but the way they played fair netball. A great way to represent the association.

The 15 and under Division 2 team finished fourth on the ladder, with two wins, two losses and a bye. The team worked hard throughout the day, with many excellent passages of play. The coach, Nicky Smith, experimented with different combinations in preparation for the country carnival. Well done, players and families.

13 and under

Captain’s Choice fun round of Murray Bridge Rifle Club

Clear skies and pleasant conditions awaited the 16 shooters who arrived at the Deed Range in Monarto this past weekend.

This week was the “Captain’s Choice” shoot, a non-championship round for a bit of fun.

This year, the captain decided to use the technology of the electronic targets to shoot on the ISSF 300 metre 10-ring targets, scoring each round out of 10 instead of five or six.

Overall, the scores were very competitive, and most agreed if we tried it again to go a bit further back than the 300 metres that was shot at on the day.

Top scoring was by visitor and national team member, Stuart Braund, who shot a 200.16 across the two rounds, including a perfect 100.10 in the first, to win F-Open for the day ahead of Ian Elston on 199.15 and David McDonald on 198.10.

In F-Standard, the top shooter was Oscar Neumann, scoring 199.09 with a 100.05 in his second round, and beating dad, David Neumann, who finished second by a single point in the process.

In Target Rifle, scoring the same this week as F-Class, the top scorer was Robert Paech, only just behind the F-Class winners, with 196.05.

Members seemed glad to try something a bit different before they return to championship shooting next week with the penultimate round of the championship from 800 metres, which also doubles as the Patron’s Trophy.
