Matt Kowald leads crowded field at Murray Bridge Golf Club

Matt Kowald has maintained his hot recent form by winning the men’s A grade division at Murray Bridge Golf Club on Saturday.

With very wet courses in the Adelaide Hills due to the recent heavy rains, 77 visitors flocked to Ritter Street on Saturday to boost the men’s field to a whopping total of 145.

Conditions were cool but fine; players had to contend with a much slower than normal pace of play, but all got through and no-one was killed.

Many favourable comments were made about the condition of the course from a lot of the visitors, with the lower handicappers in particular enjoying the fast-paced greens.

Unsurprisingly, most of the winnings went to the visitors, who took out the overall winner’s prize and also the pro comp and yabby, but the locals will be able to bounce back next weekend.

Robert Paech, John Cranwell win 15-shot match at rifle club

The Murray Bridge Rifle Club has shot its annual Cranwell 15 this past Saturday in blustery conditions.

The 15-shot match, from a range of 600 metres, has been held on the morning preceding the club’s AGM for many years now.

With a strong breeze from the left that tended to straighten down the range at random, it was, in many ways, a case of timing that determined the winners.

In TR, Robert Paech thanked the handicapper for drawing him to shoot first, as he was able to capitalise on conditions to shoot a very impressive 74.09 off-rifle, a score that was always going to be tough to beat.

Second-placed Daniel Irvine managed a 68.04, but even with a larger handicap he was not able to catch Paech, who claimed the TR Trophy.

In F-class, the competition’s sponsor and namesake, John Cranwell, hit a purple patch and made the most of it, scoring an 89.10 off-rifle.

That left him five points clear of next best Nicole Edwards, who was the only other F-class shooter to make the 80s, as Frank Marshall and Adrian Conlon came in at third with 78 points each, with Conlon ahead on centres.

Cranwell was not to be caught, however, and finished an easy winner of the F-Class Trophy.

The club’s AGM proceeded without any surprises, with the current executive being returned for a further year.

Next week the club will begin its new championship year from 300 metres.
