Local Judd Plaisted chases glory at Monarto grand prix
The fourth round of the FIM Mini GP Australia series will hit the Monarto go-kart track, near Murray Bridge, this weekend for the first time.
Eleven-year-old Monarto local Judd “Rocket Ronny” Plaisted is on the comeback trail after an interrupted start to his season and is keen to add to his win tally after his first race victory in the previous round at Ipswich, last month.
Plaisted missed the opening round, as he was recovering from injuries, but is now back to his best and aiming to shine at his home track to improve on his sixth position in the points.
The Mini GP class is a global initiative for young kids with massive dreams, instigated two years ago by the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme, the governing body of the sport, and Dorna, the commercial rights holders of the Moto GP World Championships, to provide a pathway to the upper echelons of the sport.
The leading riders in each of 18 domestic competitions will be invited to attend an end-of-season shoot-out at the final round of this year’s Moto GP World Championship, at Valencia, Spain.
The winners of that world-wide selection are guaranteed a ride in the Junior World Championships as part of the Road to Moto GP program.
There are two classes: one open to riders aged 10-14, who compete on Ohvale 160cc four-stroke motorcycles with 10-inch wheels; and the second for older riders aged 12-15, who compete on a 190cc machine with 12” wheels.
There will be practice on Friday and qualifying on Saturday at Monarto, with two races for each class on Sunday.
Spectator entry is free.
Brodie Kostecki sweeps all three races at the Bend
Brodie Kostecki has taken a big step towards the 2023 Supercars championship, holding off Cam Waters to seal an OTR Super Sprint clean sweep.
Kostecki won all three races on a weekend for the first time, with Waters just 0.95 seconds away by the chequered flag.
Thomas Randle made it three podiums in as many starts, with Nick Percat a standout fourth for Walkinshaw Andretti United.
It could prove a defining weekend in the championship hunt, with Kostecki’s closest rivals all encountering misfortune in Sunday’s 20-lapper.

Fiery Freddy Carter sneaks in to win par comp
Popular local golfer Fred Carter got up very late on Saturday to tip out Damo Moloney and Sid Robbins on a countback and win the par competiton at Murray Bridge Golf Club on the weekend.
His score of four-up on the lightning fast greens was a cracker and due largely to his red-hot putter.
Displaying impeccable on-course manners – for once – the fiery one viewed his win as doubly sweet upon learning he had pipped both Moloney and Robbins at the death.
It was a big field of 111 competitors, propped up by the influx of 49 visitors from the soggy hills.
Locals took out top honours in all grades: Moloney played brilliantly to win the A grade with his four-up, super Sid Robbins tamed the course to conquer B grade with the same score and Neil Paech, despite having bunker trouble, secured the C grade with an excellent three-up.
Eagles to Aaron Zrim on the ninth and Corey Dahlitz on the 12th cleaned out the eagle’s nest while Luke Woods claimed the yabby on the tricky 14th hole and Echunga’s Andrew Fort won the pro comp with his sizzling four-up back nine too good for everyone else.
It will be time for a Stableford competition this Saturday.
Greg Traeger rises to the challenge on the rifle range
A small but dedicated contingent has competed in the seventh round of the Murray Bridge Rifle Club’s yearly championship this past weekend from a distance of 800 metres.
The weather was testing, as the wind changed direction from a flickering downrange breeze to a stiff right wind with little warning.
Rising to the challenge was Greg Traeger in target rifle, who shot a pair of 48s to claim the top off-rifle award as well as the handicap award by half a point from his daughter Jasamine.
