A Murray Bridge-based rugby league club has been named NRL SA’s club of the year.

The Black Swans, a league club established by members of the Maori Evangelical Church, received the award late last month.

The club is one of five which competes in NRL SA’s metro competition, the top-level of competition for men in South Australia.

Luke Dillon wins the Battle of the Bridge

Luke Dillon has been declared the winner of the opening Sprintcars SA event of the season at the Murray Bridge Speedway.

A last-lap incident between Joel Heinrich and Chad Ely bought the red lights on, but fortunately for Dillon, he had officially crossed the line just prior to the incident, therefore ending the race.

In fact, Dillon was the only driver to complete the 30-lap journey due to the red light, with Ryan Jones and Mount Gambier’s Scott Enderl completing the podium.

Andrew Meddle medals at the golf club

In perfect golfing conditions, quality local A-grader Andrew Meddle stormed to victory over a massive 132 other competitors in a stroke competition at Murray Bridge Golf Club on the weekend.

Amassing a two-over-the-card 70 off the stick, nett 63, he edged out B-grader Paul “Chainsaw” McCulloch on a countback.

Justice was served, however, as Meddle’s chip for birdie from the thick grass at the back of the 18th green seemed hole-bound all the way before cruelly lipping out.

Not to worry – his wedge survived its sudden violent journey to the ground and there were no lip-readers in the vicinity to decipher his description of the unfortunate miss.

Robert Paech is pick of the bunch on the rifle range

Another pleasant and sunny awaited shooters this past Saturday at Monarto as the Murray Bridge Rifle Club competed from 600 metres.

The breeze was gentle but varied, and several shooters struggled to get a good read on it as the flags didn’t always agree with the mirage and at times didn’t even agree with each other.

Top of the range for the day, and clearly not having problems with only one off, was Robert Paech in TR, whose second-round 50.05 was the only possible of the day.
