Australian top fuel record broken at the Bend
In front of more than 10,000 fans on the final day of the Riverbend Nationals, Damien Harris, of Rapisarda Autosport International, has set a new Australian top fuel record with the quickest time on Australian soil of 3.733 seconds, and the fastest (speed) in Australian history at 529 kilometres per hour.
The new track continues to prove itself as one of Australia’s best, with top doorslammer racer Russell Taylor also going under the national record with a time of 5.591 seconds to the quarter mile.
South Australian and interstate visitors voted with their feet with the Riverbend Nationals recording a three-day crowd of 27,880.
Top fuel will return for the second annual Spring Nationals on October 18-20, 2024.
Michael Broadley shrugs off last-hole debacle
Despite a final-hole meltdown, Michael Broadley has held on to easily win Saturday’s stroke competition at Murray Bridge Golf Club.
With just the 18th to play, he was looking at a possible score of nett 62 or thereabouts.
After covering more ground than Burke and Wills, however, a quadruple bogey eight was recorded for a still great final tally of nett 65 and a comfortable win.
A marvellous front nine of 37 off the stick for the 14 handicapper really set up his round and also won him the day’s pro comp.
It wasn’t a day for low scoring, with Broadley the only player to better his handicap, making his round aĺl the more meritorious.
Gavin Thoman capped off a good week on course by winning the A grade while Jim Honner made a cameo appearance to take out the B grade.
Troy Penhall broke through for a win in the C grade and Jeff Smith was back in the money as runner-up.
Last week’s winner, 11-year-old Levi Ashton, proved he wasn’t a one-round wonder by backing it up with a good nett 70 to lead up the placegetters.
Jockey Lachlan Neindorf confident of quick recovery
Leading rider Lachlan Neindorf is confident he’ll be back in the saddle next Saturday after injuring his arm in a race fall at Murray Bridge on Wednesday.
Neindorf was riding the Richard and Chantelle Jolly-trained debutante Strasbeau, who began buck-jumping shortly after the start before dislodging the rider.
“I’m okay, no broken bones,’’ Neindorf said.
