President takes the honours on a chilly day for golf

Another fine but bone-chillingly cold day has greeted the men competing in a Stableford competition at Murray Bridge Golf Club on the weekend.

It was hard work for the majority of the field, too, with scoring not easy.

A three-way tie eventuated, but club president Mark Bolton comfortably had the better back nine, enabling his victory on countback.

Thirty-seven points would not normally be a winning score, but it was on this occasion and “Bolts” did it in style, carving out a round that included five birdies.

Of course the prodigious hitting right-hander who muscles the ball off the tee could have a dozen birdie putts on a good day, but getting that ball in the tiny little hole is always easier said than done, so five birdies in any round is a good effort.

The A grade was fought out between Peter Erickson and Greg Schmidt, with the former coming out on top, 36 points to 35.

Erickson would no doubt be ruing his putt of one foot missing on the 11th, which cost him a chance of winning the day.

Yes, we’ve all done it though – even a side-on putt that short can still veer away wildly down the slope if not struck firmly enough.

Rob Muster had a solid 35-point round to secure B-grade victory over Luke Woods, who was just a stroke away.

Gregarious farmer Daniel Marrett backed up his fine first-up round the week prior with an even better 37 points this time out to grab C grade honours over Jake McIntosh on a countback, with both players playing out of their skins to each be so close to winning the day.

Echunga Golf Club visitors Matthew Taylor and Shaun “Slasher” McGlashan bookended the ball-winners list with their 35- and 33-point rounds, respectively.

Mario Grande, a nine-handicapper, gobbled up the back nine in just the two over-the-card 36 shots to win the pro comp with 21 points, making president Bolton unlucky to have been pipped on the countback after his even par 34 off the bat, also for 21 points.

Crafty golfer Terry Marsh, not happy with hìs recent form, was given a fillip when he struck closest to the pin on the short fourth hole to snare the highly-sought-after yabby.

It will be par comp time this Saturday, so come and give it a try.

Mypo netballers beat Jervois by 23 goals

Mypolonga and Imperials have both romped to big victories in round nine of the River Murray Netball Association season.

The Mypo game started in very cold conditions, with the home side scoring off their first centre pass through goal shooter Kara Martin.

Jervois struck back, then the quarter progressed goal-for-goal until Mypolonga goal defence Georgia Steinert took an aerial rebound under the post to turn the momentum towards her side and give it a five-goal lead by quarter time.

Both teams displayed long-shot accuracy during the second quarter, in particular Jervois goal attack Courtney Afford.

Jervois wing attack Tessa Thurston provided good ball placement for goal shooter Taylor Lindner as she battled with Steinert, but Mypo wing attack Stacey Kempe created space and goal attack Lauren Nolan displayed strength and accuracy to give the home team a 13-point lead at half time.

A great intercept from wing defence Elyse Faehrmann gave Jervois some momentum in the third, and wing attack Jodie Burt combined well with Thurston, who had moved into centre, but Mypo put on relentless defensive pressure and took an 18-point lead into the last break.

Stacey Hein started the fourth quarter after an injury substitution and added to the full-court attack.

A high-flying intercept from Steinert was a highlight in the closing stages as Mypolonga sealed a 64-41 win.

In the other Saturday game, Imperials defeated Ramblers 61-44.

Gordon Harrison, Robert Paech top scorers at rifle shoot

A small contingent of shooters has gathered at the Deed Range at Monarto for the first round of the new championship year for Murray Bridge Rifle Club, from a distance of 300 metres.

It was a chilly winter afternoon on Saturday, with an icy wind blowing throughout, but thankfully it did not rain and the wind was reasonably consistent.

This was especially true for Robert Paech and Gordon Harrison, who both managed to score possibles.

It was Harrison’s first since switching to F-class.

Both men won the top off-rifle awards in their respective classes, albeit by narrow margins.

The handicap, however, was not a close affair, as Harrison’s outstanding performance gave him victory by 10 points.

In less desirable awards, the magpie prize was won in both classes this week, with regular Wayne Halliday claiming it for F-class with a single unlucky shot and Daniel Irvine winning the TR trophy with two birds, to the relief of his wife Jasamine, who scored one.

There will be no shooting this week while the Queen’s Competition is held at the state range in Lower Light; shooters will resume the following week from 1000 yards.

Cycling club needs a home base

The Murraylands Cycling Club is looking for an area where it can operate clinics in Murray Bridge.

President Jason Woodard said the club had made some great headway towards reaching its goals, securing more than 20 bikes for a training and coaching program, including a mobile cycling clinic which will enable it to take cycling and life skills to the people.

The bikes were donated by cycling clubs and individuals including the Whyalla Cycling Club, the Mount Gambier Cycling Club, Shannon Ross, the McCormick family and Bentley Graham so that others might enjoy the benefits of cycling.

Club members have been refurbishing the bikes and fitting them out so that they are up to standard.

Once established, invitations to participate in the program will be forwarded to schools, community organisations and interested groups.
