Past and present staff, clients and friends have celebrated radio station 5MU’s 90th birthday at Murray Bridge Golf Club.

A function on Saturday evening followed a week of on-air celebrations around the time of the anniversary in September.

Former announcers lined up to share stories, and several more recorded messages in tribute, as did musician John Schumann and Premier Peter Malinauskas.

Pioneering broadcaster Frank Miller originally established the station – the second to be granted a licence in South Australia – on the corner of Thomas Street and Eleanor Terrace, Murray Bridge on September 16, 1934.

As content director Adam Connelly noted on Saturday night, this was an era when the original inventor of wireless telegraphy, Guglielmo Marconi, was “still kicking around”.

The 5MU call sign is the oldest still in continuous use in SA.
