River navigation will be restricted as old Murray Bridge refurbishment continues
The redirection of navigation lanes will allow for scaffolding structures to be erected underneath the bridge for the next eight months.
Navigation channels under the old Murray Bridge will be redirected for eight months to create a temporary work zone as work continues on its refurbishment.
The zone will allow for work to be executed safely above the water with the installation of scaffolding.
The redirection will be in place from next Monday, July 25, until March 31, 2023, weather permitting.
During that time, access to the temporary work zone will be restricted for all river users, including powered and non-powered watercraft, and water activities.
Temporary channels would be clearly indicated through marine signage, channel markers and buoy lines, the state Department of Infrastructure and Transport said in a statement.
Safe passage for recreational and commercial vessels would be maintained at all times.
Environmental controls would also be implemented to ensure there was no impact on the River Murray.
A $36 million refurbishment of the bridge, intended to extend its life by 30 years, has been ongoing since May.
