Peace poles erected at Murray Bridge High School

Murray Bridge has become one of 100 sites across South Australia where a local Rotary Club has held a peace pole ceremony to mark International Peace Day.

Five peace poles were put up at Murray Bridge High School last Thursday, each with the message “may peace prevail on Earth” written in four different languages on each side.

MBHS students at the launch reinforced the multicultural message on the poles by speaking words of peace in different languages, including German, Mandarin, Swahili, Greek, Maori and Bahasa.

Student MC Bior Bior spoke to Murray Bridge News about how he felt to have the peace poles at his high school.

“I feel like it’s an honour to be here,” he said.

“It’s a beautiful moment because it represents peace.”

Assistant principal Roxanne Rowland was pleased that out of the 100 SA locations selected, Murray Bridge High School was in the early group chosen, so the local poles were numbered seven to 11.

The peace poles were a project of the Murray Bridge Rotary Club.

Club representative Sam Cozens also spoke at the launch and shared a message from the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.

Mr Guterres’ message was that “peace is not automatic – peace is the result of action”.

Mr Cozens was happy with how the peace pole project at MBHS had turned out.

“It’s created a lot of interest,” he said.

“It’s involved a lot of people, and it reflects the multicultural aspect of our community.

“The central message from today is that peace comes from people, and we’re not overcome by our leaders getting involved in conflict.”
