Round four of the MJS Street Stock Series has gone down to the final laps, with Carey Weston made to fight for the win in a two-lap dash for the chequers after holding a comfortable lead late in Saturday’s race at Murray Bridge Speedway this season.

Weston would start off of the front row for the feature alongside Craig Buchanan.

He got the jump, Buchanan made an early inside pass, then Weston regained the lead a lap later.

The pair would continue their battle until lapped traffic came into play, allowing Weston to open up a handy advantage.

The first half of the race continued in that order, with Weston leading Buchanan and Michael Brown, before the field was stopped at the 15-lap marker to be sent in the other direction.

On the commencement of the second half, Buchanan continued to pressure Weston early on, with plenty of passing further back for positions four to eight.

Brown then managed to sneak past Buchanan into second, with Jayden Edwards and Jason Gantz making moves through the field into the minor placing positions.

Weston had opened up a half-lap lead and looked set to collect the chequered flag until Brown clipped the fence, bringing out the cautions.

The field bunched up for the race re-start, with two laps on the board, Weston leading the way with Edwards right on his tail.

Weston held his nerve and crossed the line ahead of Edwards, Gantz and Buchanan.

Wingless sprints, late models, and junior sedans were also on the program.

Andrew Heard takes the good with the bad on the rifle range

Eleven shooters have been greeted with glorious weather on Saturday afternoon at the Deed Range at Monarto, at least as far as the temperature went.

Sunny skies and a cool breeze made for comfortable, if not challenging, shooting conditions as members competed from 600 metres.

In a rare occurrence in target rifle, B-graders outnumbered A-grade competitors on the day, with John Cain claiming the off-rifle grade win with a pair of 45.01s.

A-grade was contested between Andrew Heard and Robert Paech.

This week Heard had the edge, claiming the off-rifle win by five centres, 94.06 to 94.01.

The high V-bull count for Heard also helped him claim the handicap win in target rifle for the day, and he scored the only “bird” for the day to claim the dreaded “Magpie” Award and make it an un-sought-after clean sweep.

In the F-classes, FTR was represented this week by Nicole Edwards, who scored a commendable 106.01.

However, it was not enough to catch David McDonald in F-open, who topped the off-rifle charts by scoring 115.04, four points ahead of the top-scoring F-standard shooter Gordon Harrison.

Harrison’s score of 111.06 however, was more than enough to give him success in the F-class handicap, as he continues to collect wins successfully flitting between the F-standard and target rifle disciplines.

There will be no competitive shooting next weekend, but the championship season will continue again on the 19th at 400 metres.
