The Adelaide Benevolent Society is celebrating 175 years of providing rental housing and financial assistance this year.

Founded in 1849, the non-religious, not-for profit organisation has supported more than 55,000 people through housing and grants.

Its property portfolio includes more than 270 houses and units across Adelaide and regional SA, including 24 at Tailem Bend.

Tailem Bend resident Rhonda Mik moved into her home at the former Taberefta Homes for the Aged nearly 30 years ago.

The society purchased the retirement community in December 2019.

Despite some residents’ concerns at that time, Ms Mik said the society’s expertise and knowledge had resulted in happiness for all.

“It has been a very successful move for the residents of the homes,” she said.

Society CEO Necia Pascale said the need for affordable rental housing had grown astronomically in the past three years.

“We understand home ownership isn’t possible for many people, especially in the current economic climate,” she said.

“Our independence provides us with the ability to help those people.”

Proceeds from the sale of Taberefta, which was originally established by the community, are in the process of being returned to local groups and clubs through the Tailem Bend Advancement Group.
