Soroptimist International Murray Bridge’s tertiary scholarship is once again up for grabs, with $2000 on offer.
Those eligible are year 12 students who attend a school in the area and who have applied or are applying to be accepted into tertiary studies in 2023.
The coordinator of the group’s scholarship committee, Robin Wilson, said the money could go towards anything study-related.
“In the past, students have used the money towards textbooks, even accommodation,” she said.
The scholarship has been running since 1991, and has since been awarded to more than 32 students.
“We often hear back from past winners and see what they are up to,” Ms Wilson said.
“One winner became a doctor and is working locally, and that’s how they are giving back to the community.”
The criteria students will be assessed on includes academic achievement, personal qualities and community involvement.
In turn, Ms Wilson said “you don’t have to be the most academic student” to have a chance to win.
“Mainly, we’re looking for students who are community-minded people,” she said.
“For example, they may participate in sporting clubs, or volunteering activities.
“We look at the things they have already done in their life that show that community-mindedness, because they’re the students who are most likely to give back to the community.”
Ms Wilson said that while the Soroptimists were a group that primarily focused on women, the grant could be won by anyone.
“We like to help local people … (the grant) is a bit of a leg up.”
To apply, students can request an application form from their school’s year 12 coordinator, or by contacting the club via their Facebook page.
Applications will close on December 5 at 4pm.
Schools that are eligible for the scholarship:
Coonalpyn Area School
Coomandook Area School
Karoonda Area School
Mannum Community College
Murray Bridge High School
Tyndale Christian School, Murray Bridge
