The first Gold Cup race day to be held on a Saturday has proven a knockout success for Murray Bridge Racing Club.

A big crowd turned out over the weekend to see Jack the Lad beat En Français by just over a length to claim the $120,000 feature race.

Wellington trainer Michael Hickmott had to settle for third place with Lord Vladivostok, while Stuart Padman’s Montign ran fourth and pre-race favourite Chicago Storm, from David Alridge’s stable, came fifth.

At Murray Bridge Racing Club are Annabelle O'Neil, Emily DeMichele, Georgia O'Neil and Rihanna DeMichele; Jason Quinn, Grant Harrison and Penny Quinn; Clint DeMichele, James McLaren and Hayden Mumford; Alex Pfeiffer, Lucy O'Neil and Katelin Kneebone; Scott Chandler with Daniel Menzel, Josh Coulter, Troy Menzel and Darcy Chandler; and Judd Smith, Tim Spry and Shaun Williams. Karavas won the day’s new feature race, the Moorundi Classic, while Bubble Over took out a new sprint named for former racing club chairman Reg Nolan and Travis Doudle’s Wiggum won the thousand-metre 1000 Guineas.

As ever, a couple of thousand locals and visitors were dressed to the nines for the occasion, and Murray Bridge News was there.
