A burn-off at Monarto South will hopefully encourage new growth of a vulnerable species of wattle.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service and Country Fire Service began a prescribed burn at Ferries McDonald Conservation Park around 2pm on Wednesday.

An area of 2.5 hectares was burnt to promote germination of seeds from the neat wattle, acacia rhetinocarpa, which grows only in parts of South Australia.

The burn was one of 42 scheduled to be carried out across South Australia during autumn, but the only one in the Murraylands.

As well as encouraging new growth, NPWS fire management director Fiona Gill said prescribed burns reduced fuel loads, reducing the spread and intensity of any bushfires in an area.
