By day he’s a mild-mannered youth worker, working behind the scenes to help teenagers achieve their musical dreams.

Stick him behind a mic, though, and you’ll discover another side to Aiden Fargher, AKA Subliminal.

The part-time MC released his latest hip-hop track last month, the gritty, pain-infused Blood Diamond.

Producer El Double had laid down the beat for the track years ago; the lyrics came together at a time when Fargher was suffering through and infection but “mad hungry to get the recording out”.

While he has performed at venues like the Thebarton Theatre, Governor Hindmarsh and Hindley Street Music Hall over the years, music like his wasn’t always appreciated by the industry, he said in a video posted on his social media channels.

He described it as pure, authentic hip-hop – something that was hard to make.

“Blood diamonds are incredibly valuable and beautiful gems, but the process of how they’re mined is f***ed up and relies on a whole bunch of sacrifice, child labour and all of that stuff,” he said.

“That’s kind of the metaphor for this album: how much sacrifice and pain – obviously not child labour, of course – but to mine the gold out, sometimes it takes a lot.”
