Murray Bridge has been found to be a hotspot for fatal and serious car crashes.

According to a data analysis by the RAA, Murray Bridge was second in South Australia for the total number of crashes, behind only Adelaide.

Between 2013 and 2022 Murray Bridge had 64 total crashes, 55 serious injuries and nine lives lost.

In the first half of this year 77 per cent of road deaths had been in regional areas, the RAA said, a figure 10% higher than the 10-year average.

RAA safety and infrastructure senior manager Charles Mountain said South Australians preparing to head away for the school holidays neeed to keep safety in mind.

“Regional roads are generally high speed, where a small lapse in concentration or moment of distraction can have catastrophic consequences,” he said.

Mr Mountain reminded drivers to stick to the speed limit, take regular breaks and share the driving if possible.

“Remember the fatal five causes of road trauma: distraction, excessive speed, not wearing a seatbelt, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and dangerous road user behaviours,” he said.

Other regional towns in the top five included Whyalla and Mount Gambier.
